Bangladesh again leads the SAARC Telecom Alliance
After 2017, BTRC, the telecom regulator of Bangladesh, has been nominated as the chairman of the 22nd International Conference of the Association of South Asian Telecommunication Regulators (SATRC) and also the Vice-Chairman of SAARC's Telecommunication Policy, Control and Services Working Group. As a result, BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder will lead the next SATRC-23 conference.
Bangladesh received this recognition through the regulatory body BTRC for its contribution to the tremendous development of the telecommunications sector in digital transformation among the Council member countries.
The nominations came after a three-day virtual meeting of nine SATRC countries that ended on Wednesday (November 3rd).
In this regard, Deputy Director of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Zakir Hossain Khan said that the 22nd meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulatory Council (SATRC) was held on November 1-3, 2021 under the auspices of Asia-Pacific Telecommunication (APT). The meeting was attended by heads of telecommunication regulatory bodies of 9 SATRC member countries namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran; various levels of government and private officials and Secretary General of APT and senior officials. Concerned officials led by BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder represented Bangladesh in various sessions of the three-day virtual meeting.
BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder delivered a keynote address at the inaugural function on SATRC Action Plan Phase VII, APT's Strategic Plan for 2021-2023 and SATRC Action Plan Phase VIII for 2022-23 and at the Regulators' Roundtable.
On the second day of the Council, the 2023 South Asian Telecommunication Regulators 'Council (SATRC-23) meeting will be held in Bangladesh at the Head of Regulators' Meeting to determine the future activities of the SATRC. Mr. Sikder was elected Vice-Chairman and Chairman of SATRC for the term of 2023.
